System Planning Corporation Selected to Participate in Cargo Container Security Initiative by Ports of Seattle and Tacoma
Arlington, VA - September 29 - System Planning Corporation (SPC) today announced that the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma have selected it to participate in demonstrating a cargo container security system for the Operation Safe Commerce initiative. The value of SPC's participation in this supply chain demonstration is $1.58 million.
"SPC's international reputation as a leader in technology development and systems integration for government and industry clients, as well as our expertise in homeland security and domestic preparedness, are the reasons we were selected for this nationally important project," said Charles L. Cragin, SPC's senior vice president for national intelligence, security and response.
Operation Safe Commerce is the U.S. federal government's innovative public-private partnership program aimed at improving international and domestic supply chain security. The initiative uses existing trade lines to evaluate and test new security systems designed to prevent and combat terrorism. The program's goal is to increase the security of intermodal cargo shipping containers, container ports and terminals.
During the course of the Operation Safe Commerce initiative, SPC will demonstrate and evaluate a seamless container security system, which uses micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology and satellite tracking to enhance the physical security of intermodal containers. SPC's objective during the year-long demonstration is to determine the best integration of human factors and technology to increase container security in a cost-effective manner.
Under the contract, SPC will secure, monitor and track containers of a Nagoya, Japan manufacturing company as they are stuffed in Japan and travel by ship, truck and rail to their final destination in the United States.
The SPC team includes:
- All Set Wireless Tracking, Bromma, Sweden, provider of electronic cargo container seals.
- Marine Exchange of Alaska, Juneau, AK, provider of integrated communications and web enabled ship-tracking solutions.
