System Planning Corporation Center Director Authors "Total Cost of Fire in the
United States"
Arlington, Va. (Apr. 27) -- The Director of the Center for Data Analysis in SPC's
TriData Division, Patricia Frazier, has authored an analysis of the cost of fire
in the United States, which appears in the Spring 2005 issues of "Fire
Protection Engineering," the official magazine of the Society of Fire Protection
Engineers.
The article, "Total Cost of Fire in the United States," highlights that the
total cost of fire is in the range of $130 billion to $250 billion a year in the
U.S. and discusses why understanding the economic magnitude of the cost is
important to the public and government decision makers.
SPC's Center for Data Analysis performs research and data analyses for the
federal government, state and local fire departments, and the private sector. It
supports the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) in managing the world's largest
fire database -- the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS).
The Center also prepares research studies based on NFIRS content. This includes
authoring the last six editions of "Fire in the United States," the definitive
study of fire statistics and 10-year fire trends. Additionally, the Center
prepares topical research reports on a wide variety of fire-related issues and
in-depth studies of selected subjects, such as a 20-year study of firefighter
fatalities in the U.S.
