System Planning Corporation Awarded U.S. Forest Service Wildland Fire Contract
Arlington, VA (Aug. 1) -- System Planning Corporation (SPC) today announced that
its TriData division has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Forest Service to
analyze the costs and benefits of large wildland fire cost-containment
strategies.
TriData will review reports that have made more than 100 recommendations to
manage costs on large wildland fires to determine which will yield the greatest
savings. A majority of the work will focus on conducting a cost benefit
analysis of the recommendations to determine the potential cost savings
associated with implementing each of them. TriData's effort will help the Forest
Service implement those recommendations with the greatest potential cost savings.
The study will result in a roadmap with milestones, which provide details on how
to best implement the recommendations. The work is important because the costs
associated with suppressing wildland fires have risen dramatically during the
past 10 years. The higher costs are, in part, due to the build up of fuels
which can lead to more intense fires, the population growth in the wildland
urban interface, and weather patterns.
