Arlington, Va. (Feb. 24) – As the country focuses on the criticality for security at U.S.
ports, Northern Virginia-based System Planning Corporation (SPC) today announced it will
shortly begin the operational deployment of its GlobalTrak® system of "smart devices"
to secure cargo in shipping containers 24x7 throughout the world-wide intermodal supply
chain.
Linda Easley, SPC senior vice president for Homeland Security, said that after successful
Phase II global tests (conducted under the Transportation Security Administration's
Operation Safe Commerce), "GlobalTrak® will move into its final testing phase before
becoming an off-the-shelf commercial solution for use by industry and the government."
Easley said the GlobalTrak® system of "smart devices" or "smart sensors" identifies
incidents ranging from the unauthorized opening of a container door, to detection of harmful
chemicals, and to identifying the presence of weapons of mass destruction
In real-time global testing in 2003, the GlobalTrak® system successfully secured cargo in
containers moving from the Middle East to Maine and from Asia to Chicago. The system
provided 24x7 visibility throughout from origin, through U.S. ports of entry via maritime
and land means, to final destination, the company said.
Howard Kympton, president of the GlobalTrak® organization, said, "GlobalTrak® provides a

In a recent interview, Bethann Rooney, Director for Security for the Port Authority of
New York and New Jersey, said, "The current exposure of port security is especially critical
with the need to provide security of global shipping containers against terrorism."
Easley said, "This is why a GlobalTrak® solution is so important; its ‘smart devices' give
shippers and transportation management information on location, condition, integrity and
security of cargo containers. It can warn of a problem, such as an intrusion, breach, or
insertion of contraband material well before the vessel reaches a US port or affects port
operations."
