Airborne Situational Awareness Tool

Click to expand During the initial test flights of the airborne radar system in preparation for the Atmospheric Reentry Measurements, radar operators found it difficult to maintain situational awareness. In particular, the lack of external references in the windowless aircraft made it virtually impossible to keep track of aircraft orientation. In turn, the radar operators could not give effective real-time course corrections to the pilots. To address this problem, the Airborne Situational Awareness Tool was developed. This software tool is designed to maximize both ease of use and flexibility.

Features

  • Display and storage of avionics data such as time, latitude, longitude, altitude, pitch, roll, and crab angle.
  • Graphical display of aircraft position and heading superimposed on an area map.
  • Display of target position on map, as well as global views for orbital targets.
  • Flexibility to use any map obtained from the web or other sources.
  • Tools for creating flightpath using waypoints.
  • Tools for exporting and displaying stored position and altitude data.
  • Timeline showing current time as well as mission elapsed time of major events.
  • Expansion Options:
    • Target location based on telemetry data (current configuration uses waypoints or trajectory file)
    • Record observer-target geometry statistics including:
      • Closest approach
      • Apogee/Perigee (orbital/ballistic targets)
      • Aspect angle vs. time
      • Radial velocity vs. Time
      • Other custom statistics
    • Mission Planning Module:
      • Bearing, elevation, range vs. time (relative to observer)
      • Aspect, elevation, range vs. time (relative to target)
      • Aspect, elevation, range vs. time for circling target with roll angle.
